Big Tree

Well, a little while ago I get an email from my Dad saying that the big tree out behind their house has been cut down by the state. This thing was huge, and you could see for about 2 miles when you were heading to the house from town. Tallest tree on the horizon.

Anyway, it made me think of someone I worked for growing up, Mr. White. He was an attorney in town, and lived in our neighborhood. I did yard work on Saturdays for him from when I was 13 until I graduated and went off to the Navy. He was always trying to teach me something, things like figuring out my check in my head (4 and 3/4 hours at 4.15 per hour is...)

Anyway, that tree always makes me think of him, because when the state widened the highway years ago they had tagged the tree to be taken down. He was offended, because he thought they always took too many trees, and fought up and down the state until they decided to leave it alone.

He's passed on, but that tree always reminded me of him. It's gone too, now.

Of course, for Brandon, it was the big landmark you could see at the end of the long drive to Grandma and Pop-pop's house. Everything changes :)

My memory from my grandparents on my Mom's side was a porcelain cat that looked as if it were climbing the wall next to the door. It kind of looked over its shoulder at you when you were ringing the doorbell. It meant a lot to me, so now it is sitting on our front porch.

I'm not even going to look

I know it's really bad. Really, really bad. I refuse to look, however. I know I haven't updated for months, but I'm not going to figure out how long.

We've been really busy. I've been playing geek on a grand scale, Rachel is getting our office in order, and Brandon's just going crazy on school and Runescape (straight A's... Again!).

I've thought several times about cool things to put on here, but never get around to it. However, since I got an email a couple days ago from my friend Weave saying I was worse than him, I figured I'd get cracking again.

So, some interesting things:

  • We got a cat. Pictures are coming soon

  • Someone built a working version of the Babbage Difference Engine out of Legos

  • The state came and cut down the huge old tree behind my parent's house. We have pics of that too somewhere

  • I can't think of any of the other things right now
  • Well, over the next couple days I'll try to write about these things, and think of a few more.
